New Spring Ads: Karl by Karl Lagerfeld, Marni for H&M, and More

Written By: - Jan• 28•12

Two of the most anticipated mass-market fashion lines for spring 2012 released their print ads this week. Karl Lagerfeld tapped some of his favorite models, including Anja Rubik, Sui He, Saskia de Brauw, and Arizona Muse, for his debut Net-a-Porter Karl by Karl Lagerfeld campaign. Meanwhile, Marni for H&M also released their ads, starring British actress and sometime model Imogen Poots. Finally, props to Vivienne Westwood for consistently booking a diverse cast of models: This season stars South Korean model So Young Kang alongside Australian model Dempsey Stewart and British socialite Eliza Cummings. Westwood previously booked Kenyan model Ajuma Nasanyana for her fall 2011 ads.

See those images, and Gisele’s new Versace Jeans campaign, in our comprehensive spring 2012 campaign slideshow.

Jersey Shore Style Recap: A Commitment to Tattoos and Prints As Independent Things

Written By: - Jan• 28•12

Normally something that’s as easy to overlook as a vegan at Fashion Week, tattoos were at the crux of the plot line on last night’s episode of Jersey Shore. The “meatballs” got temporary ones while Vinny completely redesigned his chest with the permanent variety. Also of note: The cast wore a lot of color, maybe because (can a show with no plot have spoilers?) Vinny came back to the house, rearing and ready to go to Karma and find someone random to have sex with, and everyone’s spirits were high again. See those highlights, last night’s pink trend, and more clothes worn in the latest episode in the slideshow.

Here’s Rachel Zoe Dressed Up As a Vampire

Written By: - Jan• 28•12

A recent tweet from Rachel Zoe’s team included a photo shot for the new issue of LOVE magazine, explaining Rachel is styled as a “real-life vampire” (spoiler: such things don’t actually exist, right?) and that they’re “literally dying” at the sight of it. Maybe vampy Rachel killed them for their chai latte–flavored blood! But at least she let them finish and send the tweet first.

Have You Noticed the Seamstresses on 24 Hour Catwalk Are Quite Sassy?

Written By: - Jan• 28•12

Lifetime’s other great fashion reality competition, 24 Hour Catwalk, winds its contestants up and breaks them down again — over and over — by, as its title suggests, making them work for 24 hours straight. (They’ve also cast very shrewdly.)

After a quick challenge narrows down the competitors from four to two, the finalists are tasked with creating a three-look collection in a day, fully realized and runway-ready. Their helping hands, a rotating group of experienced seamstresses, wind up stealing the show. There’s the lady with the wacky fascinators, a high-pitched British woman named Sam, and of course, eye-rolling JustRaymona — you might be able to call her Just for short, but only if she likes you (and she probably won’t like you). Sure, they’ve been picked for their hissy-fit-inducing potential, but their side-eye glances and caustic critiques work so well because, with countless years of expertise between them, they know exactly what they’re talking about. Here’s a video of their best back-biting moments from last night’s episode.

Don’t Expect Manolo Blahnik to Appreciate One Percenters

Written By: - Jan• 28•12

Says the designer, “I find the idea of the super rich quite disgusting. I recently turned down a lot of money to create a mass-market type product. I don’t want to make that sort of money if I am polluting my brand.”

Demi Moore’s 911 Call Alludes to Mysterious Drug

Written By: - Jan• 28•12

Disturbing reports of Demi Moore’s drug use catalyzed by her breakup with Ashton Kutcher surfaced the other day, and now the recording of the 911 call has been released. On the call, you can hear one of Demi’s friends telling the 911 dispatcher she smoked something “similar to incense” and that it was “not marijuana.” The unidentified woman describes Demi as burning up, convulsing periodically, and breathing irregularly, but still responding by squeezing her hand. Us Weekly asked a drug expert what the drug could have been.

One potential guess could be synthetic cannabis. Known as “K2,” “Spice” or “herbal incense,” it’s a blend of herbs, spices and a synthetic compound similar to THC, the psychoactive ingredients in marijuana.

“It’s a relaxed high,” Dr. John Sharp, MD, faculty member of Harvard Medical School explained to Us Weekly Friday. “People who aren’t used to it can feel uncomfortable and self-conscious. Others feel relaxed physically,” added Dr. Sharp, a psychiatrist who has worked in celebrity rehab centers.

Medical studies suggest the drug could cause psychosis, heard attacks, and convulsions, while this Dr. Sharp says, “We see a lot of emergency room visits related to spice.” Demi was seen partying recently, reportedly drinking twelve cans of Redbull in one night. Oh, Demi!

We hope she gets well soon.

Written By: - Jan• 28•12

Model, activist, Columbia student, and occasional Cut video-blogger Sarah Ziff discusses her efforts to start a labor movement for models. “It’s a very strange job — being a clothes hanger, essentially — but it’s still a job,” she explained over pizza. “We have fundamentally the same concerns as the American worker.” See the full story in this week’s issue.

Party Lines Slideshow: Blake Lively, Chloë Moretz, Jaime King, and More at Jason Wu for Target Launch

Written By: - Jan• 28•12

At last night’s launch party for Jason Wu’s new Target line, the designer explained the black-cat motif that’s been the theme of the collection’s ads and clothing. It was his idea, he says: “I’m a cat person. I have two cats.” (His publicist told us later that their names are Peaches and Jinxy.) They’re also gray, just like his whole apartment, as we saw for ourselves recently. Are they as friendly as the cat in Wu’s Target ads? “They don’t come out. They’re very shy.”
