Charlotte Gainsbourg Only Changes Her Outfit ‘When It’s Smelly’

a 250x375 Charlotte Gainsbourg Only Changes Her Outfit When It’s Smelly’

As one of the few humans who looks amazing with basically no makeup and a messy hair nest in her face, Charlotte Gainsbourg’s approach to fashion is noncommittal: “Style for me is a casual way of putting something on. It’s not thought out but needs to suit your way of life. Now I like wearing the same sweater over and over again, then taking it off when it’s smelly.” She covers the women’s spring fashion issue of WSJ. magazine, out this weekend.

Stephen Jones on Those Crazy Hats He Made for Marc Jacobs

a 146x97 Stephen Jones on Those Crazy Hats He Made for Marc Jacobs

Milliner Stephen Jones — the man behind the pimp-meets-Mad-Hatter headgear in the fall 2012 Marc Jacobs show — says he started working on the 60 oversize hats back in November. “Marc had this idea about the face being surrounded by volume and about beauty,” he told Vogue UK. “We researched Edwardian shapes and Veronica Lake shapes.” Jones designed hats for Victoria Beckham this season as well, and, back in London, he did toppers for Issa London, Giles Deacon, and Kinder Aggugini. He will also present an exhibit on hats titled “Headonism at Somerset House. So, in case you didn’t already know, hats are definitely  happening.

Richard Phillips Paints China Chow for Chinese Vogue

a 146x97 Richard Phillips Paints China Chow for Chinese Vogue

Anyone who watches Bravo’s Work of Art: The Next Great Artist knows that this cover idea must have been birthed when Richard Phillips appeared as a guest judge alongside host China Chow. (And yes, Young Sun was robbed!) In any case, Phillips painted Chow in his signature hyper-realistic style for the cover of Chinese Vogue‘s spring 2012 collections issue.

Rita Doesn’t Wear Outrageous Sunglasses by Choice

a 190x190 Rita Doesn’t Wear Outrageous Sunglasses by Choice

Meet Rita, a fantastic 80-year-old lady who owns more than 70 pairs of over-the-top sunglasses that she’s amassed with the help of her friends. She wears a different pair each day because she doesn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings, not because she actually likes them. “Oh God, no,” she says. “You think I’d be wearing these things of my own choice? No. But now they’re my trademark and I feel lost without them.”

Gucci’s Funereal Show: A Metaphor for Europe’s Economy?

a 560x375 Gucci’s Funereal Show: A Metaphor for Europe’s Economy?

At today’s Gucci show in Milan, morose-looking models walked down a bruise-colored carpet in heavy, sinister makeup. The lighting was dim, the backdrop was dark, and the clothes were almost all black. Which reminded some critics of another lugubrious topic: the European economy. Writes the Telegraph‘s Luke Leitch:

This is set to be a gloomy year for Italian fashion — analysts suggest sales will decline by 5.2 per cent in 2012 — and Gucci’s opening show today captured that mood perfectly.

Leave it to Gucci to turn all this terribly unglamorous talk of austerity measures (lower minimum wages, eew!) into something expensive like feathered coats. Frida Giannini described the collection as “a dark glamour,” citing “romanticism” and “military references from the 19th century” as her main inspirations. Sheer purple pants fit into this vision, too, apparently, as did long capes and lots of velvet.

But despite all this chic cheerlessness, don’t lose any sleep over Gucci suffering from the eurozone’s money troubles. Milan Fashion Week president Mario Boselli addressed that very issue today: “Our fear is to see again what happened between 2008 and 2009, when fashion sales dropped by 15 per cent,” he said. “This time it shouldn’t be as bad, because brands have slimmed down their operations and expanded in emerging countries.” So in other words, Italians might not be buying these black clothes, but folks in China definitely will be.

a 146x97 Prince Charles to Kick Off Men’s Fashion Week

Prince Charles will kick off London’s menswear “weekend” in June — also known as London Collections: Men —  with a special reception at St. James palace. With British GQ editor Dylan Jones, Tom Ford, and Burberry‘s Christopher Bailey already backing the new initiative to support British menswear, Charles’s “beyond fashion” presence should provide extra gravitas.

Milan’s first day of shows turned out sheer fabric panels at N°21, black leather skirts at Francesco Scognamiglio, and brightly-colored fur (electric blue and purple!) at Alberta Ferretti. Meanwhile, John Richmond showed black fringe dresses, crinoline-style skirts, and fabric printed with skeletons and purple roses — on a reflective runway, no less. a 146x97 No Need to Worry About Baby Beckham’s Knees

If the thought — nay, the nightmare — of Harper Seven bruising her precious chubby baby knees was keeping you up at night, fear not! Victoria Beckham tweeted this today: “Amazing! baby knee pads for when babies start crawling!! X vb http://yfrog.com/mn1azsuj” You know, just in case all you normal, non-knee-pad-owning moms out there wanted another reason to feel bad about your parenting.
